May 21, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) issued the following statement today after H.R. 6, the 21st Century Cures Act, passed the full Energy and Commerce Committee with bipartisan support. The bill will increase biomedical research and accelerate the approval process for new medical devices and prescription drugs, giving patients more access to life-saving treatments.

"The level of bipartisan support for this bill is a testament to its tremendous promise – affording practitioners improved health care technologies and providing patients with better medical care. I want to commend Chairman Upton and Ranking Member Pallone for coming together to advance this significant piece of legislation.

"Importantly, this bill would give young science researchers more opportunities to pursue cutting-edge and potentially life-saving medical studies. With the 21st Century Cures Act, we can offer crucial resources to the next generation of researchers as they embark on groundbreaking projects to strengthen the American health care system."

Leaders of the House Energy and Commerce committee hope to bring the bill to the House floor in June. To learn more about the 21st Century Cures Act, see here.
