Sarbanes Statement on the State of the Union Address

January 20, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) tonight issued the following statement after the State of the Union address:

"Tonight, the president laid out a number of significant policies and initiatives that will help strengthen our economy, give middle class families the bigger paychecks they deserve, advance educational opportunity, expand workers' rights, mitigate climate change and enhance our nation's cybersecurity," said Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md). "I applaud the president's commitment to these bold and important policy initiatives."

Sarbanes continued, "However, we must also recognize that many Americans remain cynical about Congress' ability to address these issues. That's due, in large part, to the corrosive influence of big money in politics. As a country, if we want to make real progress on issues that are critically important to everyday Americans – issues like the minimum wage, environmental protection, food safety, tax reform and civil rights – we need to reform our current system of big money politics and return to government by the people, not just the wealthy and well-connected."
