Washington, D.C. – Today, Congress passed H. Res. 783, by a vote of 423, recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month and celebrating the vast contributions of Hispanic Americans to the strength and culture of the United States. “The Hispanic American community has made significant contributions to the economic, cultural, and social fabric of the State of Maryland and our Nation,” said Congressman John Sarbanes. “In addition to our annual recognition of Hispanic history, culture and accomplishments, this year we also celebrate the appointment of Sonia Sotomayor, the first Hispanic American Justice of the Supreme Court, as a milestone for the Hispanic American community and all Americans.” Hispanic Heritage Month takes place from September 15 to October 15th each year. It was established in 1968 as National Hispanic Heritage Week and was expanded in 1988 to cover a thirty day period that overlaps with the Independence Day observance of 10 different Latin American countries. |
