Sarbanes Statement on House Passage of Bill that Extends Salary Freeze for Federal Employees

WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) issued the following statement today after voting against legislation that singles out middle-class federal employees by freezing their salaries for the third year in a row:

“Using our federal workforce as a political punching bag is not only fundamentally unfair, but it is also supremely unwise because it undermines the government’s ability to operate efficiently. Republicans vote over and over again to gouge our public servants, while refusing to consider balanced proposals that call for shared sacrifice. This doesn’t make sense.

“It is shameful that the House GOP continues to treat America’s hard-working federal employees like a deficit reduction piggy bank. They’ve contributed more than $100 billion over the past two years. Where does their sacrifice end?”

Federal employees have already accepted a two year pay freeze, an increased pension contribution, and a reduced and delayed cost-of-living adjustment this year. Together, that has resulted in a $103 billion contribution toward deficit reduction. By voting to freeze their salaries for a third consecutive year, the House asked federal employees to contribute an additional $11 billion.
