Sarbanes Statement on FCC Internet Access Rules

WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) today released the following statement on the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) draft Open Internet Notice of Proposed Rulemaking:

“I am committed to an open and vibrant Internet.  As such, I am deeply concerned by the recent press accounts of the FCC’s draft Open Internet Notice of Proposed Rulemaking.

“By allowing the creation of so-called “Fast Lanes,” the FCC’s proposed rule would allow incumbent Internet Service Providers to erect tollbooths on the information superhighway, stifling innovation and competition and rewarding those with the deepest pockets.

“As the FCC moves forward, I plan to review thoroughly Chairman Wheeler’s proposal, working with my colleagues in Congress and the advocate community, to ensure any final rule respects the principles of openness that have allowed the Internet to long be a crucible of innovation and collaboration.”
