Sarbanes Statement on Senate Hearing to Consider Constitutional Amendment to Limit Big Money Politics

BALTIMORE – Today, as the Senate Judiciary Committee convened a hearing on the Udall Amendment, U.S. Congressman John Sarbanes (D-MD), author of the Government by the People Act, released the following statement on the critical need to fight back against big money politics and empower everyday Americans in our democracy:

“I strongly support the Udall Amendment and commend the Senate Judiciary Committee for taking this first step in a long march to return our democracy to the American people. Amending the Constitution is a Herculean political feat, but our government is awash in money and we must do everything necessarily to prevail, no matter how long it takes.

“With a Supreme Court that is hostile toward political spending limits, we must also implement reforms like the Government By the People Act to empower everyday Americans and give candidates an incentive to build their campaign on a foundation of thousands of grassroots citizen donors. It’s time we replace Congress’ dependence on big money with a new model that puts the people back in charge.”
