Celebrating Earth Day in MD-03

April 26, 2022
The Sarbanes Standard

Dear Friend,

On Earth Day, we celebrate our environment and natural resources. They are not a given – we must recommit to fighting climate change, investing in clean energy, protecting public health and advancing environmental justice to preserve our planet for future generations.

To recognize this important day, I joined Marylanders for several events appreciating our planet and doing our part to act on climate change:

At Howard County's annual GreenFest - a great event featuring local businesses, non-profits and government working to promote sustainability and environmental stewardship - I had the opportunity to hear how these sectors are making Howard County healthier and greener.

Last week, I joined the Howard County Conservancy in celebrating Howard County Public School's 9th grade students for completing their watershed study, which encourages students to engage in an authentic and meaningful exploration of their local watershed.

I also joined Howard County Executive Calvin Ball for the launch of a new high school certification program, the Youth Climate Institute, which will help to educate and inspire the next generation of environmental stewards.

On Earth Day, I teamed up with City of Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley and Georgetown East Elementary School students for a tree planting. Trees are essential to combatting climate change and protecting clean air and water – and they make a nice addition to the school grounds!

Another critical component of our efforts to protect the environment is strengthening our infrastructure to withstand the effects of climate change. Mayor Buckley, Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman and I highlighted new federal investments in climate resilience at the Annapolis City Dock. This funding will help to support flood protection, storm water management and other resiliency measures.

Finally, this weekend, it was great to be with Anne Arundel County Councilwoman Allison Pickard and Glen Burnie residents for a community clean up event. Cleaning up litter is critical to preventing pollution and protecting wildlife.

I also recently introduced the No Child Left Inside Act, legislation to expand opportunities for environmental education in schools across the country and ensure the next generation has the environmental literacy skills to secure and sustain their future.

As we move forward, we must continue this work for the future of our planet. I will continue to support legislation on the federal level to address the climate crisis and empower the next generation of climate leaders.

Sincerely,
