Pelosi, Sarbanes Announce Launch of By the People Project to Imbed Reform in House Democratic Agenda

July 18, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and Congressman John Sarbanes, Chair of the Democracy Reform Task Force, announced that House Democrats are developing a comprehensive package of democracy reforms to fight back against efforts by President Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress to degrade America's democratic institutions, subvert federal ethics standards and undermine the public interest in favor of special interests and wealthy donors.

Led by the Democracy Reform Task Force, the By the People Project will assemble key proposals from House Democrats to strengthen our nation's ethics laws, fix our broken campaign finance system and re-empower the American voter.

"Americans are alarmed by the Trump Administration's blatant disregard for ethical norms, and frustrated that Congressional Republicans refuse to speak out against President Trump's litany of abuses," said Leader Pelosi. "Now more than ever, we must fight to reform our democracy. That is why House Democrats are committed to comprehensive reforms that fortify our ethics laws, fight big money in politics, and give voters real ownership of their elections."

"The Democracy Reform Task Force is proud to lead the fight against the Trump Administration's ethical violations and we will continue to push back against Congressional Republicans, who are stacking the deck against ordinary Americans," said Congressman Sarbanes. "For too long, big money and corrupt politics have infected Washington. House Democrats are committed to fixing this problem by strengthening our ethics laws, reigning in the influence of special interests and ensuring that each and every American can have his or her voice heard in Washington."
