Funding Will Support Maryland’s Coastal Management Program

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) today announced $2.6 million in federal grant funding to help protect Maryland's coastline from severe weather and rising seas. These federal resources will support the implementation of the Maryland Coastal Zone Management Program, which improves collaboration between federal, state and local stakeholders and makes long-term investments in strengthening the resiliency of coastal habitats and ecosystems.

"The effects of climate change are worsening at an alarming rate, and communities in Maryland and around the country will need to accelerate mitigation efforts," said Congressman Sarbanes. "This grant funding will play an important role in improving the resiliency of Maryland's coasts and helping to protect the vitality of the Chesapeake Bay."

For several years, Congressman Sarbanes has supported robust funding for coastal restoration and protection. Recently, the Congressman joined a letter to the Chairman and the Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies, urging them to include adequate funding for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's ocean and coastal programs.
