Sarbanes Announces More Than $1 Million for Fire Prevention Services in Maryland

Federal funding will help protect Maryland communities from fire emergencies

WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman John P. Sarbanes (D-Md) today announced the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded more than $1 million for fire prevention services in Maryland through its Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program.

“This funding makes a federal investment in safeguarding Maryland communities,” said Congressman Sarbanes. “During an emergency, we count on our first responders to be ready at a moment’s notice. It’s critical that our fire departments and fire prevention agencies have the tools they need to find out why these emergencies occur and how we can prevent them in the future.”

The AFG program works to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service organizations. Since 2001, the AFG has helped firefighters and other first responders to obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training, and other resources needed to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.

Federal funding has been awarded to the following organizations for fire prevention services:

International Association of Arson Investigators – $714,000

Baltimore City Fire Department – $307,952
