WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) today joined U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen, along with Representatives Elijah E. Cummings and Dutch Ruppersberger (all D-Md.), in announcing $1.1 million in federal funding from the Department of Transportation (DOT) to the Canton Railroad Company.

The grant will support Canton Railroad Company’s Switch Replacement Project, which will benefit surrounding communities by improving freight rail service safety and reliability. The Canton Railroad Company provides critical links between the Port of Baltimore and the Class 1 railroads. Coupled with the DOT grant award announced last week to upgrade the Howard St. Tunnel, today’s grantmaking will deliver key modernizations and improvements to freight rail services in Baltimore.

“For over 100 years, the Canton Railroad Company has been a key part of the freight and shipping industry in Baltimore,” the Members wrote. “Modernizing our transportation infrastructure is key to Maryland’s economic success and this funding will allow the Canton Railroad Company to install new switches and continue to provide safe, efficient and dependable service.”

The DOT grant to Canton Railroad Company will be awarded through the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements Grant Program, which funds various types of railway infrastructure projects that aim to improve safety, efficiency and reliability of intercity passenger rail and freight rail systems.
