WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) today joined Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen, along with Congressman Dutch Ruppersberger (all D-Md.), to announce $311,523 in federal funding for the Howard County Housing Commission to help individuals with disabilities obtain market-rate housing.

The funding comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Housing Choice Voucher program.

“Housing vouchers are an essential tool in our effort to make housing more affordable for all Marylanders,” said the lawmakers. “As we celebrate these important investments in Howard County, we will continue fighting to make sure that all Marylanders, including individuals with disabilities, can afford a safe and secure place to call home.”

Funding for this investment comes through the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2018, which designated approximately $385 million for new vouchers nationwide. The Housing Choice Voucher program is the federal government's major program for assisting very low-income families, the elderly and the disabled afford decent, safe and sanitary housing in the private market. Since housing assistance is provided on behalf of the family or individual, participants can find their own housing, including single-family homes, townhouses and apartments.

Participants are free to choose any housing that meets the requirements of the program and are not limited to units located in subsidized housing projects. Housing Choice Vouchers are administered locally by public housing agencies (PHAs). The PHAs receive federal funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to administer the voucher program.
