Sarbanes Congratulates Howard County Public School System for Winning U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools Award

April 24, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) today recognized Howard County Public Schools for receiving a 2015 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools Award. The school system received the award for its innovative efforts to reduce environmental impact, promote better health and provide engaging environmental learning experiences for its students.

"I'm proud to represent public schools in Maryland that make environmental protection and environmental education a top priority," said Congressman Sarbanes. "In order to protect our environment for future generations, it's our responsibility not only to reduce our impact on the Earth, but also to inspire the next generation of environmental stewards."

Congressman Sarbanes has long championed environmental education. To that end, he recently reintroduced the No Child Left Inside Act, which would provide teachers with the resources necessary to implement hands-on environmental learning experiences for students.

Howard County Public Schools were among fourteen school districts, fifty-eight schools and nine postsecondary institutions to receive this prestigious award. Winners were selected from a nationwide pool of applicants nominated by 30 state education agencies.
