Sarbanes Joins Fight to Ensure Fair and Accurate 2020 Census
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) today co-sponsored the Fair and Accurate Census Act, a bill to ensure a full and correct count as the U.S. Census Bureau conducts the 2020 Census amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Across the country, states like Maryland depend on an accurate decennial census to allocate critical federal resources and ensure fair representation for our communities,” said Congressman Sarbanes. “Compounding the Trump Administration’s efforts to undermine the 2020 Census, the COVID-19 pandemic has presented several obstacles to the Census Bureau as it aims to reach each and every community in the country. This new federal effort will help provide the Bureau with the flexibility and accountability needed to ensure an accurate count.”
Key provisions of the Fair and Accurate Census Act include:
- Extending the deadline to deliver apportionment and redistricting data to states by 120 days to account for census counting disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic;
- Requiring the Census Bureau to deliver monthly updates to Congress about the progress of census operations;
- Providing flexibility for colleges and universities to ensure that students are counted at school; and
- Ensuring the Census Bureau focuses solely on achieving a complete and accurate count.
