Subpoena Comes After Postmaster General DeJoy Refused to Produce Documents and Communications Requested by the Committee; Follows Congressman Sarbanes’ Demand for DeJoy to Commit, in Writing, to Prioritize All Election-Related Mail as First-Class Mail

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) today joined Democrats on the House Oversight and Reform Committee in issuing a subpoena to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy and the Postal Service Board of Governors, requiring them to produce all documents and communications related to the Trump Administration's efforts to delay mail delivery in communities across the country and sabotage election mail.

Importantly, the subpoena requires the Postmaster General to produce, "All documents and communications drafted, sent or received after June 15, 2020, referring or relating to the postmarking and delivery of election mail, including but not limited to: a. Operational plans for the processing and delivery of election mail; and b. Treating election mail as First Class or better for the November 2020 elections."

The subpoena comes after Postmaster General DeJoy repeatedly failed to produce the requested documents. It also follows Congressman Sarbanes' personal appeal to the Postmaster General to commit, in writing, to treat all election mail as First-Class Mail and to ensure that mail ballots get delivered on time.

"The Postmaster General has ignored our numerous requests to provide relevant information and communications detailing his harmful operational changes to the U.S. Postal Service," said Congressman Sarbanes. "He must immediately produce these documents and comply with our committee's requests. In the meantime, we will continue to follow the facts and get to the bottom of the Trump Administration's scheme to disrupt mail delivery and upend election mail across the country."
