Sarbanes on Republicans Obstructing Freedom to Vote Act

October 20, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Democracy Reform Task Force Chair John Sarbanes (D-Md.) issued the following statement after Senate Republicans blocked consideration of the Freedom to Vote Act (S. 2747):

"Today, Senate Republicans voted to block debate on the Freedom to Vote Act, critical legislation that would protect the voice and the vote of every American," said Congressman Sarbanes. "It is nothing short of tragic that at this moment of great peril for our democracy, Republicans would stand against commonsense measures to strengthen access to the ballot box, fix partisan gerrymandering, prevent election subversion and combat the influence of dark money on our politics."

"In the face of unending GOP obstruction, it is up to Democrats to restore the Senate and ensure passage of this legislation, which is so desperately needed to repair the torn fabric of our nation."
