WASHINGTON, D.C. – During a House Oversight and Reform Committee hearing today, Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) criticized United States Postal Service (USPS) Postmaster General Louis DeJoy for degrading critical mail delivery services as the country braced for the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Postmaster General DeJoy – you, I think, conceded … that there was some failure of execution in terms of the plan that you were implementing last spring and summer,” said Congressman Sarbanes, who has focused intensely on holding Postmaster General DeJoy accountable and improving USPS mail delivery services after the Trump Administration began sabotaging and undermining USPS last spring and summer. “The headscratcher for me was that you would barrel forward with your plan as the pandemic was ramping up.”
Sarbanes continued: “I just never understood – leave aside the pros and cons of the plan, and I have a lot of concerns about it – but why you wouldn’t go into some kind of a pause mode at a time when the postal workforce was going to be under incredible pressure, I never completely understood.”
