Sarbanes Statement on the 48th Anniversary of Turkey’s Illegal Invasion of Cyprus

July 20, 2022

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) today released the following statement on the 48th anniversary of Turkey's invasion of Cyprus in violation of international law:

"Today marks 48 years since Turkey's brutal invasion of Cyprus. In contempt of international standards and Cyprus' sovereignty and legitimacy, Turkey continues its illegal occupation to this day," said Congressman Sarbanes. "The United States must use all tools at its disposal to hold Turkey accountable for its ongoing belligerence toward the Cypriot people and to help secure the reunification of Cyprus in a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation."

He continued, "We must also fortify the mutually beneficial strategic partnership with Cyprus. I will continue working with the Biden Administration and my colleagues in Congress to strengthen the critical ties that bind our two countries, recognizing the indispensable role Cyprus plays in the security and stability of the Eastern Mediterranean."
