WASHINGTON, D.C. – Democracy Reform Task Force Chair Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Md.) released the following statement today on the eighth anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Shelby County v. Holder:

“As we mark the 8th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's disastrous Shelby County v. Holder decision – which unleashed a torrent of Republican-led voter suppression efforts across the country – we must inject new urgency into our effort to protect the right to vote with the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.

“We must respect the voices of Americans in every community – Republicans, Independents and Democrats alike. We cannot allow GOP-led voter suppression schemes to drown out the voice of the people.

“In this historic moment to rise up and protect the sacred right to vote – and to restore the foundations of our democracy – we cannot, and will not, fail. Inaction is not an option.”
