Sarbanes Statement on Attorney General Sessions Resignation

November 7, 2018

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) released the following statement today after President Donald Trump requested the resignation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions:

"President Trump's decision to remove Attorney General Jeff Sessions and replace him with chief of staff Matthew Whitaker – just hours after Republicans lost control of the U.S. House of Representatives in the midterm elections – is a blatant attempt to interfere with special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation. Mr. Whitaker has expressed open hostility and opposition toward the Mueller probe and must immediately recuse himself from overseeing the investigation. A Democratic Congress will hold President Trump accountable if he continues to undermine or obstruct the Muller investigation. No one is above the law."
