Sarbanes Statement on Earth Day

April 22, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) issued the following statement today in observance of Earth Day and in recognition of the March for Science:

"This year, Earth Day carries a particular significance because the Trump Administration's cozy relationship with special-interest polluters will challenge the scientific integrity of our environmental policies across the federal government. Whether it's climate change, Chesapeake Bay cleanup or other critical programs, our nation's energy and environmental policies must be rooted science, not politics. We should use this occasion to announce our united effort to challenge Trump Administration policies that fall short of this basic test.

"In Congress, I am fighting back against these special interests with their big money campaign contributions and well-connected lobbyists. In this fight, I am deeply encouraged by the support of people in Maryland and around the country who are participating in the March for Science this weekend. Preserving the integrity of scientific research and encouraging lawmakers in Washington to make evidence-based public policy are crucial in our effort to protect the environment. I will continue to stand with Americans of all different stripes coming out in support of science and in defense of our Earth."
