Sarbanes Statement on GOP Anti-Immigrant Bill

June 29, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) issued the following statement today after voting against H.R. 3003:

"Instead of putting forward comprehensive reform proposals that would make our nation's immigration policies more effective and humane, the President and Congressional Republicans are again pursuing an agenda that divides the country. The National Fraternal Order of Police opposed this bill because it threatens public safety, victimizes immigrant communities and undermines the authority and expertise of local law enforcement organizations around the country. The bill would directly harm Maryland communities by threatening the loss of millions of dollars in federal public safety grants and weakening public trust in law enforcement agencies."
