WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) issued the following statement today after voting against a partisan House Republican bill that would hold hostage the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and Community Health Centers (CHCs) unless deep cuts are made to other public health initiatives including Medicare and Medicaid:

“Instead of working across the aisle on a traditionally bipartisan issue, House Republicans have rammed through a partisan bill that pays for the Children’s Health Insurance Program by robbing funds from other critical public health and prevention programs, including Medicare and Medicaid, and continuing their effort to sabotage the Affordable Care Act. With CHIP funding running out in Maryland and in many states around the country, Congress must act quickly to reach a bipartisan deal that reauthorizes CHIP without undermining crucial health programs and services in communities across the nation.”
