Sarbanes Statement on King v. Burwell Decision

June 25, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) issued the following statement today after the Supreme Court, in a 6-to-3 decision, ruled that the Affordable Care Act (ACA) can provide subsides to help millions of Americans afford health insurance:

"As a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, I was fully engaged in the debate over health care reform and was confident that this was a very thin challenge based only on misconstruing a few words in the Affordable Care Act. Despite more than 60 attempts by Republicans to repeal the ACA and two Supreme Court challenges, it's been proven over and over again that this law is constitutional and that it's working. After today's decision, all Americans – regardless of where they live – will continue to have access to premium tax credits so that they can get the high-quality, affordable health care they deserve."
