Sarbanes Statement on Nomination of Tom Perez as Labor Secretary

WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) today issued the following statement after President Obama nominated Tom Perez for Secretary of Labor:

"I applaud President Obama's nomination of Tom Perez to be our country's next Secretary of Labor. He is a committed and qualified public servant who knows firsthand the struggles facing millions of middle-class Americans and those who are working hard to reach the middle class. He's seen these struggles at a local level as county councilman in Montgomery County, and on the federal level in his current position as head of the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. Tom's experience makes him uniquely qualified to serve as the country's top advocate for American workers.

"I know Tom from his term as Secretary of Maryland's Department of Labor where he worked tirelessly on behalf of Marylanders struggling during some of our toughest economic times. He established foreclosure prevention measures that helped keep families in their homes and job training programs that provided people with the skills they needed to find and keep jobs. I am confident that Tom will use his expertise in this new role to help put Americans back to work and continue our country's economic recovery."
