Sarbanes Statement on Resignation of Government Ethics Director Walter Shaub

July 6, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Democracy Reform Task Force Chair Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Md.) issued the following statement today after the Office of Government Ethics' Director, Walter Shaub, announced his resignation:

"Supporters of accountable and transparent government lost a steadfast ally today. Throughout his tenure, Director Shaub worked tirelessly to ensure that elected officials and federal employees were held to the highest ethical standards. As we reckon with a Trump Administration that is openly hostile to ethical standards and that is rife with conflicts of interest, we must strengthen ethics rules to prevent our nation's public servants from exploiting their positions of power for private gain."
