Sarbanes Statement on Supreme Court's McCutcheon Decision

April 2, 2014

WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) today released the following statement on the Supreme Court's decision to throw out aggregate limits on political contributions. Sarbanes is a leader in Congress on campaign finance reform and has introduced the Government By the People Act (H.R. 20), which establishes a viable, small-donor alternative to the current system of big money politics. The legislation avoids contribution and spending restrictions that have been struck down by the Roberts Court:
"The Supreme Court's McCutcheon ruling is a bad sequel to Citizen's United that will further damage our democracy. It is yet another victory for big money campaign donors and special interests at the expense of everyday Americans and the public interest. We need comprehensive reform that will return us to government by the people, not bought and paid for by special interests."
