WASHINGTON - U.S. Congressman John Sarbanes today released the following statement on the agreement between the House and Senate on a bill to fund the government:
“First, I would like to congratulate our own Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.). If not for her strong leadership of the Senate Appropriations Committee, this bipartisan agreement would not have been possible amid a climate of frustrating political gridlock.
"Passing a budget to keep the government running is a basic duty for Congress. But, for years, government shutdowns and the threat of default have been looming over everything we do. We must bring an end to this era of governance by manufactured crisis. My hope is that this agreement will help set the stage for additional cooperation on some of the tremendous challenges we face in the coming year.”
