Sarbanes Statement on the Anniversary of Citizens United

BALTIMORE – U.S. Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) today released the following statement on the fourth anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision:
“Four years ago today, the Supreme Court handed down a decision that opened the floodgates for unlimited dark money spending by special interests to corrupt our country’s institutions of democracy. In the elections since, we have seen the pernicious effects of this ruling in everything from misleading television advertisements to efforts to disenfranchise low-income and minority voters. The voices of everyday Americans have been drowned out, leaving them frustrated with the system and ready for a change. We must fight for a government by the people, not bought and paid for by big money special interests.”
