Sarbanes Statement on the Passing of U.S. Representative Walter Jones

February 11, 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) released the following statement today on the passing of U.S. Representative Walter Jones of North Carolina:

"I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Congressman Walter Jones. He was a kind and committed public servant for the people of North Carolina and a tireless advocate for our service members and veterans. While Walter and I sat on opposite sides of the aisle and disagreed on many issues, we were likeminded when it came to the issue of big money in politics – and Walter's leadership on this issue was truly inspiring. Several years ago, I was humbled to join Walter on his local television program, "Washington Watch," to discuss the problem of big money in our politics and talk about the power and promise of small-donor matching systems, a solution that Walter genuinely believed in and fought for. My heart goes out to Walter's family and friends during this difficult time. He will be greatly missed."
