WASHINGTON, D.C. – Democracy Reform Task Force Chair Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Md.) released the following statement today after President Donald Trump approved the release of a misleading memo authored by House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes:

“I am deeply alarmed by President Trump’s decision to authorize the release of the so-called Nunes memo – which contains a set of distorted, nakedly-partisan allegations designed to discredit the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

“As President Trump’s own Justice Department warned, releasing this memo and revealing highly classified American intelligence is an ‘unprecedented’ and ‘extremely reckless’ move. And as President Trump’s own FBI said, there are ‘material omissions of fact that fundamentally impact the memo’s accuracy.’

“It is becoming increasingly clear that the White House – with the acquiescence of Speaker Ryan and the support of a cadre of House Republican allies like Chairman Nunes – is working to disrupt and discredit the Special Counsel’s investigation into Russian attacks on our democracy.

“This begs the question: What are President Trump and his enablers trying to hide?

“The Special Counsel’s investigation – which has been undertaken for the benefit of the American people – must proceed without interference. Any further attempt by President Trump or his allies to derail the investigation should be met with fierce opposition by all who value our democratic institutions. I call upon my Republican colleagues to show their patriotism by standing up for the rule of law and against this partisan attack on our justice system and our intelligence community.”
