WASHINGTON, D.C. – Democracy Reform Task Force Chair Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Md.) issued the following statement today after President Donald Trump appointed Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Mick Mulvaney as Interim Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB):

“The president’s attempt to openly flout the law and install OMB Director Mick Mulvaney to head our nation’s only federal consumer protection watchdog is a naked attempt to undermine the CFPB and weaken its ability to protect consumers from abusive, deceptive, predatory and unfair practices by big banks, corporations and other financial services firms. Instead of going through a regular Senate confirmation process, the Trump Administration is moving to quietly empower a CFPB director who would gut the agency and limit its power to protect ordinary Americans. It’s yet another example of the president’s efforts to put special interests ahead of people’s interests, while violating our nation’s law.”
