WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) released the following statement today after President Donald Trump nominated Judge Neil Gorsuch to fill the seat left vacant on the U.S. Supreme Court for nearly a year:

“Rather than selecting a mainstream jurist who’s respected on both sides of the aisle – like Chief Judge Merrick Garland, whose nomination languished in the Senate for nearly a year – President Trump has nominated a figure who may further polarize the Supreme Court. In particular, I am deeply concerned by Judge Gorsuch’s record on women’s health, workers’ rights and campaign finance. At a time when more than 90 percent of Americans want to reduce the influence of big money in our politics, we need jurists who are committed to strengthening our democracy and giving everyday Americans a greater voice in our government. Instead, Judge Gorsuch believes that it should be easier for wealthy donors to buy influence in our politics and harder for most Americans to vote and participate in the democratic process. I hope my Senate colleagues will scrutinize Judge Gorsuch’s record on these issues in the weeks to come.”

As Chairman of the House Democracy Reform Task Force, Congressman Sarbanes will be sending a letter to Supreme Court nominee Judge Neil Gorsuch, asking for greater clarity regarding his views on our nation’s campaign finance laws.
