Sarbanes Statement on U.S. Strikes in Syria

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) issued the following statement today after President Trump authorized missile strikes against Al Shayrat airfield in Syria:

“The images of Syrian men, women and even children killed by chemical weapons are another heartrending illustration of Bashar al-Assad’s unconscionable brutality against his own people. Last night’s airstrike in response to Assad’s horrific attack must be joined to a comprehensive strategy with our international partners to achieve a political solution in Syria and end years of bloodshed. We must be extremely careful that this strike does not lead to another protracted military engagement in the Middle East. That is why it is critical that President Trump engage in a meaningful and respectful dialogue with Congress on the path forward, including seeking Congressional authorization before embarking on any further military action.”
