Sarbanes Statement on the Passage of the American Dream and Promise Act
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) released the following statement today after the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 6, the American Dream and Promise Act:
“Today, I proudly joined House Democrats in advancing critical protections for more than 2.5 million immigrants who enrich our economy and our society – including thousands of immigrants in Maryland. The American Dream and Promise Act would halt callous efforts by the Trump Administration to take away legal protections and deport immigrants who have strong roots in our communities and who are deeply woven into the fabric of our great nation.
“The bill would ensure protections and offer a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers, who, on average, arrived in America when they were eight years old and have built their lives and careers in this country. The bill would also establish a pathway to permanent residence for individuals with Temporary Protected Status and recipients of Deferred Enforced Departure, who have, on average, lived in America since 1997.
“The American Dream and Promise Act builds on our country’s rich history of welcoming immigrants – like my grandparents – whose hard work and diversity brought prosperity and strength to our nation.”
