WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) released the following statement today in observance of Memorial Day:

“Today, a grateful nation remembers the service members who gave their lives in defense of our country. Their service, sacrifice and heroism reminds us of the price that was – and still is – paid to protect our values and our way of life.

“Our country can never fully repay the debt we owe our veterans and our active-duty service members. But today, we should all rededicate ourselves to fulling our commitments to the men and women who bravely serve our country. This means ensuring that our veterans and their families have access to high-quality education and job training. It means helping our veterans successfully transition back into civilian life and connecting them to well-paid jobs and public service projects in their communities that would make use of their valuable skills and experience. It also means making sure that our veterans receive the health care and retirement benefits that they have earned.”
