Sarbanes Video Message on Black History Month

February 2, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) released a video message today to commemorate Black History Month. Below is a transcript.

"February is Black History Month. It is our chance to step back, as we do each year, and consider the legacy, the amazing contributions, of African-Americans in our communities, in our state of Maryland and in our country.

"2015 in particular is an important year. We remember the march from Selma to Montgomery – that struggle for the right to vote – led by Dr. King and by John Lewis, who I am privileged to serve with here in the United States Congress.

"And I commit, and I know many of my colleagues commit, to making sure that we bring forward and hopefully pass a strengthened voting rights act here in Washington, D.C. Nothing could be a better legacy on the fifty-year anniversary of the march from Selma to Montgomery than passing the Voting Rights Act again here in Washington and ensuring that every American has the right to vote, has access to the ballot box and their voice is being heard here in Washington."
