Sarbanes Votes for D.C. Statehood

April 22, 2021

H.R. 51 Would Admit Washington, D.C. Into the Union As the 51st State

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) today voted to pass H.R. 51, a bill to admit the State of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth into the Union and finally provide full voting rights to residents in the District of Columbia.

Last week, Congressman Sarbanes advanced H.R. 51 out of the House Oversight and Reform Committee.

"This crucial voting rights and civil rights bill will finally provide D.C. residents with full and equal citizenship in our democracy," said Congressman Sarbanes, a strong champion for D.C. Statehood and an original co-sponsor of H.R. 51. "The disenfranchisement of our fellow citizens in the District of Columbia must come to an end."
