WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) and Senators Jack Reed (D-R.I.) and Susan Collins (R-Maine) introduced legislation to bring locally developed, high-quality environmental education programs to more schools nationwide by authorizing federal assistance to states to develop and implement environmental literacy plans. The bipartisan bill would also promote professional development for teachers on how to integrate environmental literacy and field experiences into their instruction and establish competitive grants to help schools partner with colleges and non-profits to expand research-based practices in outdoor education.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The full Maryland congressional delegation, including Congressman John Sarbanes, U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen and Congressmen Steny H. Hoyer, Dutch Ruppersberger, Kweisi Mfume, Andy Harris, M.D., Jamie Raskin, David J. Trone and Glenn Ivey, are urging U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo to make a disaster determination as requested by the State of Maryland to begin addressing damage to the local seafood industry by the invasive blue catfish, flathead catfish, and snakeheads. The Secretary of Commerce is authorized to provide disaster assistance to the fishing industry when fish populations decline or other disruptions cause economic losses.
